We must adopt a positive attitude and this means we must be proactive for the sake of future generation. My gut feeling tell me that we need to draw more and more on this essence of ‘The Consciousness’. When you talk of Spirituality at this time and age, it is about the spirit of the people’s soul. Unfortunately there are many people who seem to fear the very mention of the word ‘spirituality’ when it is no more than connecting with the God within us and connecting with each other from the heart. It’s the people spiritual connection, heart to heart and soul-to-soul draw together by a strong belief and passion that will resonate the spiritual soul to reach ‘The Consciousness’. All these beliefs and human values could be inculcated through spiritual education and this is World Harmony Day goal to work on Universal Education in Spirituality.

I believe strongly that there is a need to redefine spirituality at this trouble time. Spirituality is not about religious teaching; it is all about the spirit of the people and WHD was born because the spirits were calling for one another through the collective consciousness.

World Harmony is about a spirit, a spirit of willingness from each and every one of us to understand to respect and to uplift the others around us… humans, animals, plants…a spirit which makes choices based on the harmony of the whole [planet]. It is a spirit of peace, gratitude, righteousness…the spirit of loving-kindness and to bring blessing to our people. As we continue to do that, we tend to merge with more of Life, and more of ‘The Consciousness’ becomes present. This expands the potential for other possibilities.

I had failed my ex-husband and my 2 children, BUT I CANNOT FAIL ALMIGHTY GOD because of the vow that I had made to HIM when I was a young child that I will save the world by first saving my soul! Where are the weapons of mass destruction? (a film by my daughter Greta Georges)

I made one of my first short guerrilla film called, “Where are the Weapons of Mass Destruction?” with sponsorship from Panasonic and traveled to Barcelona Peace Forums, New York City Iraq war protest and George Bush’s inauguration in Washington DC for this project in ’04. The film was later screened at the Singapore Short Film Festival ’06 at the Singapore Substation.

The question “Where are the Weapons of Mass Destruction” was addressed in this film and answered by war journalist, peace workers, conflict resolution director, street protesters and more.

“We occupy a world that is shrinking by the day. Our community is the rest of the human race, not just the neighbors living on the same street. And that community, at this moment, is being washed by the tides of war and tyranny, poverty and disease.

Happiness is not a quality or gift that is dependent solely upon a person being rich or clever or beautiful. These might help – but equally they might not. Neither is happiness an emotion often experienced in isolation. The deliberate recluse might find contentment ‘out of the swing of the sea’. But most of us would discover only loneliness, however wonderfully peaceful the first few days might be.

I have in many of these meditations personified worry in order to define it. It was my enemy for years, along with its brother, whose name is selfishness. They are often seen together and when they visit, they don’t like to find other company already there.

I know the vision of world harmony is too big for me and my daughter to carry it alone, yet I went ahead with it without a word of complain and kept on going simply because my love for God and humanity is undying. We must give hope to future generation that is the greatest gift to our children. Let’s not forget “we do not inherit this earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” – Haida Indian Saying, hence it is our duty and responsibility to keep this world safe for the children by being proactive and take a stake even in world affairs.

As a mother how could I give up in this world when God had sent two special angels to me, my filial son Gabriel and beloved daughter Greta to encourage, guide, console and keep me company as I walk my journey to God’s path to eternity? I told Gabriel if I could not realize this great vision at least my journey was not wasted as they have benefited from it. He replied without hesitation, “No Mama, your struggle is not just for two children, your success will benefit a lot of children as well.” He continued, “Mama not to worry because I believe out there someone will help you make your vision come true but definitely not your son.” Wasn’t he sweet and kind to me but above all he was so honest about himself? The way he said it has touched my soul. Even if I could not realize this special vision in my lifetime for humanity, just hearing those encouraging words from his mouth I felt great already like I am in seven heavens. The way he said it was so comforting and smoothing to my soul as it gave me the feeling that my journey was worth all the heartache, pain and suffering that I had went through.

Many years ago, this is what my Gabriel said to me, ”Mama, the cleverest thing you had done in your life is to married my Baba, if not you do not have two wonderful children to keep you company at old age. The second best thing you had done was to escape from my Baba, if not we will not have what we have now, and for you a life with freedom to chase your high ideals.” He was so right and the irony was that I had never planned for the two children; my ex-husband had planned for it and I almost aborted Greta. How could I have children when I still wanted to live for my dreams and ideals after marriage? (In a way I was a selfish woman but God got greater plan for me.) Thus, Gabriel confidence in me with his constant encouragement and assurance has made my journey very worthwhile, meaningful and rewarding. When I almost gave up on WHD 2002 as Greta was hospitalized and my immediate reaction was that I got to be a good mother first and WHD can wait, but Gabriel gave me the assurance that it was all right to carry on and he said to me in a definite tone over the long distance phone, “If Sunflower cannot do it no one could?” Can you bit that he asked me to leave Greta to God’s care and suddenly in a flash like being awoken, I felt I could conquer the world and I saw all the lighted candles in front of my eyes in one second ha! That’s the magical power of the spiritual thought, as it made life seemed so real to you even though you were full of anxiety and WHD was only three days away!

Therefore, even if death takes me I just could not give up and if I do this means my name is not Sunflower Chong anymore? Moreover, God will be disappointed in me, and on top of it how could I allow my reputation to go down the drain? So I bitted my tongue and held my head high and pretend nothing has happened to Greta as Gabriel said God will take good care of her and I refocused my strength and energy to make WHD 2002 not only happen but with great success. I believe the greatest gift for any mother is to have children with a brain to think for you and a soul to feel for you? He is a wonderful child, very realistic and practical and yet has natural artistic talents. When he plays the piano, the music flow from his soul and you can feel him and know deep down he is a very soft lad, but hard from the outside. He gave me so much strength and encouragement all these years when I was down and felt insecure. I really enjoy my children and all parents in the world should enjoy their children because it is the greatest wealth one could have. We are so connected spiritually and thus emotionally. Sometimes I felt my children are God’s angels protecting me as I move forward to try to reach my goal. What more can any mother asks to have your children to accept and understand you for who you are, inspired and pushed you on to achieve greater things in life. That was how Great Architecture and WHD 2002 came alive with his total belief and trust in me.

When I told Gabriel (about 12 years old) that it was a mistake for the Government to convert St. Joseph Institute into an art gallery, he said, “You must go out there and speak your mind and not complain in a taxi because no one will hear your voice except the taxi driver and me or just talking with your papers.” I often wrote and poured out my frustrations and feelings when I’m upset with the Government’s policy. In short, I only write when I am unhappy and I did it in a unique way by coming up with creative proposals to present my views to the Government on how I foresee the power of Great Architecture http://sunflowerchong.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/SMUS-PRIMER.pdf will benefit not only to the human soul but more so for nation-building. Besides doing it for God, I guess the pride in me has driven me to go beyond my own limits. I believe if ordinary people like us wanted to give our views and opinions on big issues we must be constructive to gain the respect of the people and Government. It is easy to criticize by opening our mouth but it is important that we should come up with a solution if not better keep our mouth shut. That was what my mother had often told me since I was a young child as she disliked intellectuals talking bad about the Government but they do not come forward to contribute and to come out with solutions to help the Government.

Remember it is the journey that count and not the destination. The meaning of life is not about the length of our life but the depth and the width in it. In our lifetime, if we have been able to spark others to think and continue to work on it, that is already a legacy. Think about Kuo Pao Kun who sacrificed his personal life and got to go to jail to make art part of living and Bro Jo who came out with all his CPF money to start up La Salle, both of them were my mentors and had inspired me to live for my dream. So what is my personal sacrifice compared to them? I didn’t go to jail for my struggle but just being ignored, ridiculed and most of the time laughed at for being a fool.

So what if I never achieved my vision in my lifetime? I strongly believe that as long as I still have faith I know one day I will arrive to my destination and I shall succeed. Well at least in the eyes of my son and daughter I am a winner in life because I dare to challenge the norm and not a failure as many Singaporeans have thought of me. My son Gabriel said that the very idea to come out with the vision to build a better world and to have the courage to embark on it, he considered me a brave and successful person. So what if the vision didn’t materialize as the vision that I hold is too big for one person to realize especially without the support of the Singapore Government and on top of it ‘spirituality’ is a taboo (link to religion) word in our society. So how to bring up the topic that we need to work on universal education in spirituality? If you equate spirituality with exercise then it is non-threatening at all but a need or necessity in life. Let me put it in a better term. How to have a healthy body? You need to do exercise and eat healthily. Now how to have a good mind? You need to use your brain to think and be fed with the right food and that is the universal spiritual food. You are what you eat and what your brain eats is what we got to figure out for the good of the society especially after Sept 11? Do we really need the cults leaders to do it on the world behalf?

I am indeed very honored to be chosen to be Gabriel’s mother as he had given me assurance and strength to pursue this impossible dream. What more can I asked especially when God had given me another very special partner my beloved daughter Greta to continue this mission and I have almost spoil everything that I have worked so hard for due to my concerned that others said that we are not qualified to carry this cause – World Harmony.

My relationship with my son Gabriel is very special. Sometime we are like parent because Greta is like our daughter. My fantasy for Greta is that she will make many people happy and her true spirit of sharing, caring and giving will energize everyone around her and Greta will show them ‘Her Way’ to happiness. I can never get over what Gabriel said to me about my problem with Greta. He said, “Mama you know why you are upset with Greta? He continued, “It is because you thought that she is doing WHD to be famous and you expected Greta to be like you and save the world. But Mama Greta is young not like you and she will not save the world but she could touch the souls that are around her. If she is famous because of WHD it is better then to be famous by stripping!” I was so taken by what Gabriel had said to me. And best of all what he had spoken was so true. Greta is so young, so how could I expect her to go out to be the savior of the youth today. If she got the idea to make an effort to do something after Sept 11, I should be happy and let thing take it causes.

Let me share with you the correspondences that I have with my children when I told Gabriel that I wanted to close WHD website because I felt neither Greta nor I were the right person to carry this mission. We had received a lot of criticism and some people said that we hung on to WHD as an escape while they don’t need WHD to give meaning to their life, as their life is meaningful already because every day they are touching lives. We were highly misunderstood by many people due to their lack of understanding of our cause for WHD. To them all what we did was just to make noises and will not amount to anything. In short it is a waste of time.

Well you might say “Mama if you know what life is all about then why are you on this impossible journey.” Very simple my dear son, I love God and humanity and I love my children much more so I am prepared to sacrifice my personal life to show them the way to true happiness. Hi mum…I read what you wrote to Greta and I don’t think you are doing the right thing at all…please remember that WHD is not only your solo effort.

You also went the wrong way of trying to achieve it. And don’t compare your daughter to ‘xxxx’ ever again. Do not send any damaging or discouraging msgs to her ever again please. Remember that she can move WHD if she wants to and can continue on her own if she desires to. What you should do is to encourage her. Let her deal with her own relationship problems please. Advise her only if she needs advise from you. You told us you got married to follow God’s will and to achieve your dream. You set the example if you are saying what you are saying to her. Please don’t stress about her, as she is old enough to deal with her own issues. You should thank God that your own daughter is doing this and continuing your work. Concentrate on your job and things will come will come.

Don’t worry about me ultimately. I am good and things are great here. Please take care of your health and don’t work too hard, ok.

Remembered when you said that I was just like Sai Baba (promoting oneself) because WHD got the sunflower’s logo? When Gill suggested to put the sunflower’s logo I told him it was not a good idea because I will be misunderstood but he said that WHD is the spirit so we must put the sunflower’s logo to represent the spirit instead of the world’s logo (world’s logo too heavy). I wanted the world’s logo but then it end up sunflower’s logo and I did not fight it because Hatma thought that it was very appropriate and creative. So that’s it and I am happy with it.

Now this guy who send me the email that I have not met told me Sunflower mean compassion, preservation of earth and culture, this is exactly what I am working towards, so do you see the power of spirituality? And now your friend Jon’s connection with the “Community” got the world’s logo, so this means we are connected by the spiritual power and I hope they will be on board to carry this job for humanity. I see the core team of “World Harmony Community” coming together and we will be a powerful force who will bring WHD to greater heights due to our strong belief, passion and conviction that for the world to be better we got to be proactive.

I forgot to tell you last night I got a dream and this morning when I woke up it was so vivid on my mind. Hsien Loong was telling me why I did not do it and I told him I am waiting for him to be the Prime Minister and I will bring all the vision out. This vision is the Universal Education in Spirituality. This message that I wanted to bring out since my teens, can you bit it and now Jon agreed with me that this is what we should push for to bring hope to the world.

I just got a great feeling that with this connection of Jon your dream of this ‘lonely planet’ programme can be materialize. I pray to God that He will realize your dream too. Firstly when you say a good soul I feel that Greta does have one and you should not relate her relationships with her soul.

Not only her soul is good but also it is beautiful compared to many of the people in this world. Please stop your thinking of finding that perfect person to do WHD. Even a person like you, whom I feel is perfect to do this wonderful thing but yet you, must realize that it is impossible to achieve through your thinking of the perfect person. You still feel you have the right answer and perfect analysis of situations, which by now you should have a rough idea that you don’t.

Like I told you before mum, your daughter will not look at you the way she had always and listened to you if you went ahead and failed with the project. Which person in your whole entire life have you come across which come close to the fact he or she is perfect to do WHD? I can tell you definitely none. Even if you feel so then you definitely do not know the person well enough and their secrets of their life.

Your daughter has a Beautiful heart and a heart filled with compassion and love. That is what needed to do WHD. You can stick by your decision and that’s up to you. But please don’t make the same mistake twice. The person who spends the longest time of their life doing WHD is your daughter.

Your relationship with her is how you want it to be. Don’t expect her to listen to you and you should know why. She is a big girl now; one that does not needs advice unless she wants it. Even if she steers in the wrong direction she will have to learn from it. Just like you did. Nothing I said would made you change your mind set on anything, only after you have been burned then you realized the magnitude of your actions and consequences. Please let her be and don’t spoilt whatever she is trying to achieve.

Remember that two people, not one, set up WHD and your dreams have changed time and time again when it cannot be realized, like the Singapore Art Center, National Library, ASEAN House and Singapore Management University n etc. This girl is stronger and more capable than you think she is. Anyway, do what you want, but please don’t send anymore-damaging mails to her right now. You need to keep her spirit up and if you can’t do that at least don’t bring it down. Seriously, don’t stress about her. She has grown up already. Take care and don’t work too hard.

I just came from a 4 hour-long discussion on Freedom Security and Peace. I had an interview with DA MAN from the Sunday Times and International Peace Bureau. So this is just the first day and it is getting good.

I managed to get press passes so we don’t have to pay for entry and press kit to assist our filming!!

Mother, I know Txxx likes me but I already made myself crystal clear to him. So don’t worry about my losing of integrity because it will not happen with him, he is a good friend to me.

I got to thank you from the bottom of my heart for guiding me once again. When I have written that my two children are God guiding angels I really meant it. I am like a child irresponsible chasing an unrealistic dream and my children put their feet on the ground to put me back in my place. Maybe if in my heart I wanted to continue this pursue I might not behave in this manner with Greta. Because I wanted to stop so indirectly I was trying to get Greta to agree with me like I did not want Txxx to go to Barcelona but at the end she asked me not to worry as she could take care of herself. After I have sent the mail to her I felt so lousy and I know I should not have done it yet I still want to do it, just like the project.

Yes, maybe I do not really know who I am and through this journey I really found out more about myself. Thanks for being my son I could not ask for more from God and from the bottom of my soul I thank God for giving me a beautiful daughter to carry this mission. I really hope WHD will bring great personal happiness to her and to all the people that will be around her.

Greta’s Proposal

“The fun is in the trip, not the destination.” – Robert Bloch.

This was what Greta said to me when we got a small argument about WHD’s future, “Mama I’m not like you, wanting to save the world. I’m doing WHD because it gives meaning to my life.” For this reason she is hard at work trying to pile a strong foundation for World Harmony House. I told her my job for God is not to build the ASEAN House or the World Harmony House but bring out the vision and share it with whoever wants to listen.

World Harmony Day 2005: Film (Documentary) Summary

Working Title: Changing Behaviors

An exciting, young and upbeat travel documentary about a myself as a Singaporean youth, trying to play my part and learn from our European neighbors about the importance on peace keeping, youth involvement & also focus on intercultural learning experience.

As part of the short film for World Harmony Day 2005, we plan to screen a film that will demonstrate to Singaporean and other South East Asia Youths on how people in another part of the world – on a completely different continent – are working together to make a difference for peace and harmony in this world. We plan to make this film over the coming year.

The acquired possibilities in the Youth Market segment which will advance the image of Apple as we took in view of the trends of globalisation. We believe that both our Target Audience group merge and the contents of the program, expands creativity, broaden horizons, which is probably linear to Apple’s intended projection.

In addition, to highlight the accessibility of self-sufficiency, we would be certain to add recognition of sponsorship by adding to the effect, “Bringing the world to you on an imac powerbook’” which can be adjusted according to the company’s preference.

The film will be a documentary involving two young Singaporean harmonists traveling around Europe, attending several important events and recording the discoveries they make. It will be informative highly entertaining and as well as a refreshing new idea that has not been done before at all. The message of intercultural awareness and global cooperation all tied with the theme of the film.

The film will be considered for submission for various upcoming film and documentary festivals. We are also considering plans to air the documentary in Singapore and other South East Asian Countries television stations.

If well as planned, there will be about 4 episodes of about 30 minutes each.

There will be the frequent bearing of the sponsor’s logo in the credits of the show.

The high visibility will ensure that the enriching experience is being shared and

the application of the knowledge and skills learnt would help to better inform and educate as well as break the barriers between human. For this is not an isolated incident in our life but rather the application of cultural lessons learned and being introduced in our local community, which is our ultimate goal and challenge.

Title: Changing Behaviors

(We are Harmonists, Ambassadors for Peace)

The film will be a documentary involving two young Singaporean harmonists traveling around Europe, attending several important events and recording the discoveries they make.

We will also be introducing a new idea.

Harmonist – the 5 Cs foundations

In Singapore, many pursue the 5 Cs – Cash, Car, Condominium, Credit Card and Country Club. As a Harmonist, education is stepping-stone to knowledge and life education is a must for the overall well being of an individual to learn about Life, in order for us to take responsibility over the country future. In short, education is not to make money but to acquire the knowledge to take care of society, thus to build a better world for the children.

Therefore, Harmonists’ values focus will be on our definition of the 5 Cs – Consciousness, Connection, Confidence, Character and Competence. The Harmonist system will be a system that ‘The Consciousness’ is willing to share their wealth with the unfortunate and poor of society –Social Responsibility.

We go with the 5 Cs with Consciousness, Connection, Confidence, Character and Competence, Armed with a camera and a laptop they are able to document the discoveries of their process making a profound effect on other young people who wish to contribute and make a difference.

Everyone can be a Harmonist. As all facades of society needs tolerance

and understanding, it starts firstly with the immediate family, friends and the citizens of the world .The film will make special efforts into taking global issues such as the importance on peace keeping, the future of ecology, youth involvement, focus on intercultural learning and understanding sensitive differences in the European community into consideration

In all aspects of society, we have relationship with people and our own

selves. The key here is to first discover the harmony within one self and

one of the most effective ways of achieving that is to have harmonious

relationship with those who are around you. Exploring the different tools

and philosophy that drives the different sectors of society is one of the

main focuses of our film.

2. Background

Why two Singaporeans?

We don’t want to screen yet another foreign-made documentary that might be seen as having no direct relevance to the lives of Singaporean youth. By sending two Singaporeans to make this film, we ensure that Singaporean youth can see familiar faces and hear familiar accents even in places and scenes that might otherwise feel disconnected from local reality. The Singaporean filmmakers will serve as anchors to help mediate those places and events to Singaporean youth at home, sending out a strong message that people just like themselves can also make a difference.

Having two Singaporeans traveling in Europe also underscores the message of intercultural awareness and global cooperation.

Focus on Action and Changing Behavior

Intellectual awareness plays a Key role in achieving peace and harmony, however the physical involvement is just as if not even more vital. Real global awareness can only be achieved when the two work synergistically and complement each other as a true model for greater development. The intercultural learning from volunteering and working and understanding the different sectors of European service to community organizations are very much an experiential and active learning by doing. As we will not just watch, read or listen but play a proactive role by participating in other cultures, form relationships with other people and give service to other communities. Through these actions, caught on film we will clearly demonstrate that learning thus achieving one of our objectives.

Changing behaviors is something that future generations could benefit from and we must take the first step, Recognizing and appreciating our differences, the world could live in greater peace while continuing to strive towards a better world of empathy and understanding Peace is a continual working process that both continents must strive to contribute as we realize that it is almost always threatened by injustice, inequity and intolerance.

Our documentary seeks to affirm faith in the dignity and worth of every human being and of all nations and cultures. In addition, the short film highlights with high respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms without the barrier of race, sex, language, and religion. Having this opportunity provides intercultural learning opportunities to help both the youth from the future generation and today’s to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.

This will create positive youth development on a global scale and also help to encourage a network of youth across Singapore and Europe to join hands in helping to build a better world.

Awareness About Global Issues

When we live in more than one place we will begin to realize that we are truly connected as a global village with not just different cultures and practices. European community just as the Asian community has certain problems, which are shared by everyone everywhere. When the youth walk together as one by understanding the solution lies in everyone doing his or her part. While harnessing the ability to think globally and act globally and exchanging an Asian perception on human rights, ecology, environment and social responsibility as a youth yet maintaining a clear balance on cultural sensitivity. Such awareness prepares the youth to take his or her place among those addressing crises facing humankind.

Focus on Intercultural Learning

An experiential process that taps into learning about the cultural diversity of each of the European countries visited.

Intercultural learning involves active participation of the youth in a foreign environment in a highly unfamiliar surrounding encouraging them to change their perspective through cross-cultural empathy. This is a highly emotional learning experience that will open the minds and establish leadership qualities that will carry forth in a global village.

Focus on Culture

The essence in appreciating the value of each individual living in a community at large lies in the environment as one of the main driving factors. Therefore to improve the communication and ties between the two cultures, individuals must come and reach into the other culture. As we travel to the different parts of Europe translating Asian Philosophy we create a thought provoking exchange. Especially after documenting the interesting findings between helpfulness between two cultures it multiplies its potential impact. The Asia Europe Foundation can have a global impact when it’s the grass roots work in partnership. With much respect for the worth and dignity of all people, regardless of nationality, we continue to act as responsible citizens and ambassadors of Asian culture while contributing to the world through our service to the community, to others, to the environment and to the world taking responsibility as global citizens and acting as One.

The process of learning from our peers in Europe achieves this. Whilst making efforts to become involved in meaningful volunteer service and exchanging in our cultural diversity

3. Rationale/objectives

Focus on Integration and Post-Return

In many ways, what happens after we return from the enriching experience is clearly of much importance. The application of the knowledge and skills learnt can help to better serve the Singapore community at large. As well as establishing a more international aspect of our non-profit organization, this great opportunity is not an isolated incident in our life but rather the application of cultural lessons learned to our daily life in our local community, which is our goal and challenge. Therefore, we understand the utmost importance to support and maximize the integration of the knowledge attained through this enrichment. To reinforce new knowledge, by working with closely with community in building up a society in the post-return phase by taking advantage of the special knowledge and new skills possessed as we encounter new learning opportunities we help to build bridges between cultures at home.

Spreading the message and the values that we have learned will be of utmost importance as we follow up with post activities.

The Bearing Witness retreat at Auschwitz/Birkenau extermination camps (Nov 2003)

This has been an annual event of the Peacemaker Community, a multi-faith network of people and organizations practicing a vision of peace through study, spiritual practice and social action.

At Auschwitz/Birkenau a multi-faith assembly of Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, teachers, monks, nuns, priests, sheiks, swamis, rabbis, clergy and laity from many religious traditions will gather to experience the overpowering anguish, sacredness and healing power of this site. The event will remind us how important it is to maintain harmony between races and ethnic groups, and will express this through a beautiful display of religious unity.

An interview with an Arab French schoolteacher (6-13 April)

This man is a history teacher who is active in peacemaking in his community.

We seek to interview him on the relevant topics that frame our short film, including cultural diversity, conditions for peace, sustainable development, and globalization. As a man from a war-torn part of the world he is in a unique position to speak about these things, having the benefit of firsthand experience.

Parliament of the World’s Religions (7-14 July 2004)

Taking off from the previous event, this gathering of religious leaders from the world’s many different religious traditions seeks to:

Foster understanding and cooperation between diverse peoples, communities and cultures
Promote human rights and social justice
Cultivate cultures of peace
Encourage sustainable ways of living this spirit, and
To create open forums in which individuals, communities and institutions of goodwill and hope come together.

This event will continue to emphasize the message of religious harmony.

Barcelona

World Youth Festival (8-14 August 2004)

(Part of the International Forum of Cultures – Barcelona 2004)

The World Youth Festivals are international events that bring together young people from youth organizations in different countries to discuss the primary problems affecting youths and the societies in which they live. The Festivals also give participants a chance to meet one another and see the work their youth organizations are doing, as well as establish contacts for future joint projects, learn new ideas, techniques, etc.

The Barcelona 2004 World Youth Festival is expected to be a meeting point for the Associative Youth Movement, a space to make proposals and demands, and also a point of reference at the international level for the United Nations as a whole as well as for UNESCO and governments.

As some 10,000 young people are expected to participate, this event will be a sign to the youth of Singapore that even young people can do something to make a difference where it matters.

MY WORRIES WERE UNJUSTIFIED

I guessed my daughter Greta chose the fourth when she decided to embark on her trip to Europe. I was so worried for Greta when she decided to go to Barcelona to do the WHD 2005 film ‘Weapons of Mass Deception’ that I don’t want to continue this mission anymore because the first film ‘Islam and West great divide’ she almost took my heart out as you know in Singapore there is so much restriction that it can test your patience and perseverance. With the blessing from God I managed to convince her to do a WHD’s story instead as no one could attack us as it was a true story about a mother and daughter vision to light up the world through the event of WHD annually. But still in the midst of the film making due to the Iraq war she putted a lot of footages of wars and death. We were not allowed to talk of Sept 11 or war on Iraq so how could she put all those footages in the film. This was where my problem lie as to have a word ‘BLOOD’ the authority already ask me to take off the WHD website. So if we put the film up what is going to happen to WHD and us for that matter?

I can die faster yet I could not stop her as I am a true artist and I must allowed her creativity to flow and wait for the consequences. Greta got hooked and was so intense getting the job done and enjoying herself while I was ready to kill myself yet in a way I was very proud of her and was amazed at the same time on how fast she learnt, as she did not have any experience in film making. What a family and what an experience that money could not buy?

With all these anxieties I wanted Gabriel to understand where I come from and to forgive me if I decided to close down the website without Greta consent as I could not take the pressure any more. But maybe subconsciously, I was more afraid of the attack from unknown quarters and might hurt my daughter along the way. I am not afraid for myself but more so for my daughter vulnerability as she is young and I am still responsible over her. I needed Gabriel’s approval because Greta listens to him. She will not agreed to close down WHD as WHD gives meaning to her life but it gives me stress instead, how ironic it is? We got disagreement on how we should chartered WHD cause, as I wanted it to be the voice for education reform with spiritual education at its core, while Greta wanted WHD to showcase the great divide between Islam and West – social responsibility. She said recently, “Why after three years of WHD suddenly you came out with the words spiritual education?” I told her spirituality is a word that our present society does not accept so I got to wait for the right timing to push this cause of mine and I know the time is right now, WHD 2005 – Education Reform and how to get there? What is the point to do something when you could not find the solution to its problem! Therefore, the film must have a powerful message and it must strike a core with the people and touch their soul and that’s how we can effect change on the ground. Can the film deliver what I felt is important for change?

In order not to have so many arguments with Greta and spoil the mother and daughter relationship I thought it is better to dissolve it, as WHD will be too heavy for ordinary people like us to carry this responsibility especially when I was unable to reach out to the intellectuals to develop a blueprint on education reform. Everyone heard my name ran away from me, what more if I touch on spirituality in education? Moreover, based on my past experiences researching in the new thinking of seeing and using architecture, it had taken me 20 years of my youth, bitten thus escaped from 2 selfish husbands, S$2 million in hard cash down the road, 2 children a long the way not plan and finally it brought me to WHD, which is the number 2, represent harmony. So to go into R&D into universal education in spirituality, I dare not envisaged the journey and furthermore I could not do it alone. I believe it will take me a lifetime or maybe many lifetimes before we could come out with a comprehensive education format for the whole world. Even if my intelligent is not at its limit, if I could achieve it like in Great Architecture no one will listen to ‘a nobody’, so I thought I should wait for the Great Renaissances of the world to do this job for the world’s behalf. They can do it faster as they are well respected and accepted by the community at large. I have to face the hard reality of life that big idea is for powerful people to achieve and not for ‘kuching kurat’ like me.

This email from Greta is very comforting for my soul as my understanding told me that she allows me to let go if the heat is getting too hot for me to bare and it is and will be as world harmony should be the job best suited for the great intellectuals of the world.

You sent me a mail asking about WHD being our destiny, I don’t have the answer but I only know that you can only do it when it is good for you and there is no sin in that, what is sin is thinking that you have to suffer and break just to make it work, how can it feed you inside then? Yes, I agree that we need not only symbolic event but also many good films to plant seeds to many people who have not awakened yet and then each must decide how best they want to participate in the bigger picture of life while maintaining their personal life. The key is to sow the seed of social responsibility and we have just done it again on WHD 2004. Therefore, the objective of WHD is not to organize a song and dance a year, it is to raise awareness and the consciousness of people through making meaningful films that will strike a core with the people consciousness and to feel the human spirit. All I can say is that the presence of about 200 people on 20^th Feb, they have made the statement that they care, thus WHD 2004 is a success. WHD is also about building relationship too. Unity in diversity; strength of the human spirit getting along with your neighbors leaving this world a better place.

If I succeeded in realizing this great vision of a universal spiritual education, this means I am connected to the spiritual power. By reaching out to God, I am serving Him and thus humanity. I listen to no one, except this inner voice that constantly followed me in my subconscious. My ex-schoolmate said that I was lucky because God gave me the answers in my fingers tips. I will never forget this simply remark because she saw it but I didn’t and now through her I was reminded what I had – so all these creative architectural vision were God’s gifts to me. I must treasure it and know how best to use it to its fullest potential to benefit humanity. So whether it will be appreciated or accepted or not I still got to bring out the vision in the open and let things take it cause. Just like these two books, I did not make great effort to write as the feeling just take over and my emotion lead the way and everything just fall in place.

As long as God knows that I had done my best to create awareness that we have to develop ‘The Consciousness’, I believed I have done my job well on Earth. If for whatever reason I failed to exercise freedom of self-expression then I would have failed my cause and myself too. Singaporeans have been living in ‘rigid society’ for much too long thus lose their purpose in life, roots and feeling which is our true strength. As a young child I have promised myself that I will not allow this system to weaken me; instead I will rise up against all odd. When the day the society open up I will be ready. I have chosen the spiritual path so I don’t turn back but go all the way and this means with a belief I allow my passion and spirit to take over to reach ‘The Consciousness’ to God.

After Sept 11 whether the world goes on the right direction depends on the collective consciousness – “Having a sense of direction is a sense of consciousness.” – Sunflower Chong.

Whilst Islam is a religion of peace and love, there is a fringe that preaches violence, just as there is a fringe throughout any other religion.

Whilst the Roman Catholic Church had its past share of violence in the inquisition and crusades, why are the European Christians no longer violent?

This is because of increasing secularisation of European society, where Christianity takes up less importance to the average European. Today the table has turned and the “Global South” has more active and faithful Christians.

A European Christian may be more willing to eat the food that has been offered to Gods, but a Chinese Christian is more likely to avoid it.

Any monotheistic religion will be non tolerant if practiced to its purest form. Your Preacher will tell you what you pray and believe is God and the only God, what others pray and believe is of the Devil. So how can the followers have equal respect for other religions? The question lie here is what kind of action the citizens of the world should take as one big family for the sake of future generation.

This was what Stephan Covey said, “Many of the great things in this history of our civilization have been achieved by the independent will of a determined soul. But the greatest opportunities and boundless accomplishments of the Knowledge Workers Age are reserved for those who master the art of “we”. True greatness will be achieved through the abundant mind that works selflessly – with mutual respect, for mutual benefit.

Therefore, it is very necessary to come together with one true spirit to develop a book for all of humanity. If Christians have a book call the Bible, the Muslims got the Koran to guide them and the Buddhists got their religious book, what about a book for the free thinkers? Religious books got God as their anchor thus the book for humanity will have the consciousness as the anchor. It is not to replace God but Consciousness is the present of God as Stephen Covey said, “We have conscience – a deep inner awareness of right and wrong.” We need to bring the awareness of the consciousness because when you have the consciousness you will develop the sub-conscious, which is connected to the higher power.

The book “Colours of Harmony”Colours_Of_Harmony is a good start as it offers the solution to today’s human conflict. Based on a concept of racial harmony, understanding and respect for other faiths, there will be a better chance that our children will have high moral values, virtue, discipline and filial piety. Let’s be ambitious and courageous to come up with a book names “The Love for Humanity” to guide humanity to achieve peace and harmony for all?
