Dear KS,

Please don’t be upset with the civil servants because they can’t take a risk with me. Out of a blue this
situation was thrown to MR Prasad he needs to find out more about us. Moreover he must be wondering why I
could not host WHD in Suntec City? We just got to understand it will take time to change the mindset of
the people to be proactive.

I have called NLB at about 5pm and Star said that she just emailed to PELU Mr Yeo. She asked me not to put
my hope to high. I told her we will not but will leave everything to the higher power.

Dear KS,

I have submitted the license the first week of Jan. MDA said there should not be a problem with the license. Pelu Vincent told me the delay was about the candles, and that we can go ahead with our planning.

And every WHD they gave us the license at 4pm on 20th Feb except last years we got it earlier. This one is a bombshell!!

Dearest KS,

It is OK, I cried the whole morning already after I told Raffi the 23 years old boy. He said have I told Greta and the rest I said not yet. So he wanted me to tell all of you and see how. When I called Farid from PA he said “OK you must have plan A, then plan B and plan C” I said plan your head I just go ask NLB give us the place. He said cannot must find other placesin case NLB said no. So I called Terence and he said he knows someone in Poly like Temasek, (can’t remember) he can try to ask them. Denyse in NIE maybe can try her too.

The whole problem is that me and Greta like crazy women distribute about 3,000 flyers all round Singapore, so how to let these people know that WHD is not at Suntec. I was in the bus and I give this old Indian man the flyers and what if he comes? Last night I manage to email to all that we could not host WHD in Suntec.

I will be calling NLB and if you can called Prasad to assist us it will be great. Yesterday I called the second in command Ms Ngian and she asked me to email to Lai Lin and let her know what we want. So let us focus on NLB first.

As expressed by others in the team, it is very sad that such a meaningful event was not blessed to be witnessed by others.  I believed all the while that NLB is in the forefront of educating the general public in matters of general concern – health, peace, family welfare etc.  They had held many campaigns/forums to bring home messages of great importance to the children and adults of Singapore concerning many daily issues faced by them and Singapore in general.

It greatly baffled me that NLB should reject the application for the WHD’s event.   As an average Singaporean myself, I felt that You and the rest of the team had done a wonderful job in spreading the message of peace for the past 4 years in your own small ways.  This effort should by right be taken by organisations such as NLB or other govt related bodies to show how fragile peace and harmony in Singapore can be and we should not take it for granted.

As we are not affliated to any govt bodies or political groups or religious groups – we (a group of ordinary citizens of this country from diverse background and from various walks of life – giving our precious time and effort for a worthy cause voluntarily) only stand for the sake of peace & harmony.  All we aim to achieve is to share our vision for peace and harmony in Singapore with similar like minded people of Singapore.

If a national institute like NLB cannot support such a worthy cause, as an ordinary Singaporean I have my doubts and greatly disappointed.

Hope You, Greta and the rest will not easily give up and let this worthy cause die.  As one door shuts in your face many others will open for you.

Hi SF,

I think this strikes the right note:

Fate has struck another blow at our plans for WHD.  Sadly, this blow would seem to be the coup de grace for WHD 2006.

For security reasons, the National Library Board was forced to rescind its approval of our use of the National Library – Plaza for our celebration.  The director informed us of this decision only late Thursday afternoon.  That is why we are so late getting the message out to you.  (Several of us met yesterday to see what viable alternatives there were, but found none.)

We want to heartily thank all of you who have lent us your support and encouragement over the last several months.  The many out there who have done so prove that the ideal of people coming together to work towards an important positive goal, no matter how difficult, can be a reality,

The core group behind WHD will be there at the National Library on Monday evening, starting around 6:30 till roughly 9 pm to greet anyone who has not heard of the cancellation and to share positive vibes with each other.  Come and join us for a drink, maybe a small snack and we can talk about our vision. The ideals of racial and religious harmony are even more important today than they were a year or just six months ago.  None of us who believe in this vision should yield to the nasty elements of fate and abandon these ideals – or let those ideals become diluted in the wash of everyday pressures.

Thank you once again for everything,

Yours truly,

Sunflower Chong

My five cents’ worth…

Please do not release news about being there on that day as I am afraid that you might be liable for illegal gathering charges.

The usual affair of two-minutes’ peace silence and plans for a blessing by

ten representatives of various faiths from the Inter-Religious Organisation was set back as the approval from the National Library Board for the use of “The

Plaza” at the National Library Building was rescinded at the twelfth hour.

The news came as a shock for the supporters of the movement, some of whom had only learned of the annual observance during the interview of the

movement’s founder, Sunflower Chong, on the WKRZ radio station just days earlier.

Although the organisers of the gathering appreciated the concerns of the

decision makers, nothing could hide their disappointment and dismay at not

being  able to spread the message of peace, love and harmony — one that had been reverberating since 2002, when the first observance was held.

In the meantime, Sunflower Chong and Greta Georges — the mother and daughter team who founded the movement — are taking a quiet time-off to contemplate the outcome of the situation and consider abandoning their efforts of spreading the age-old cliche of “World Harmony”.

Why World Harmony Day?

“The Consciousness ignited my passion to strive for Greater Humanity?” – Sunflower Chong

“Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence.

Talent wills not, nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.

Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.

Education will not; the world is full of educated failures.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipresent”.

– Calvin Coolidge

Dear Mr. Prasad,

I am Sunflower Chong an average Singaporean who happens to have many big dreams for Singapore and our One World.

My daughter Greta and I are the co-founders of the World Harmony Day (WHD) concept.  After the tragic events of Sept 11, we felt compelled to swing into action in order to claim back our One World.  We wanted to find a way to remind everyone living in Singapore (and eventually, the rest of the world) those things

that should be uniting us were greater in number and in strength than those elements that divide us, thus was World Harmony Day born.

Many people often asked me, ”What made you do a project like WHD?”

Frankly speaking, it did not come out of a blue.  It is my own spiritual journey that others of a similar mind have joined me to take up.

We are a group of like-minded persons of all ages, religions and races, that desires to seek peace and harmony in a personal but non-religious way.  We

believe that, through personal interaction, we can touch people’s lives so that they too will focus on peace and harmony.

We seek to work with respectable organisations in Singapore but not to be affiliated or subservient to any pressure group, and strictly do not allow

religious proselytizing.

Over the past few years, we have held a World Harmony Day as a special day dedicated to the celebration of all humanity.

Our objective on 20th February (the day we’ve chosen for WHD) is to remind people not to take peace and harmony for granted.  If peace and harmony are indeed what we want, we need to learn how to share this one world of ours and to value all human lives.

As Mr Kofi Annan said, “To save one life is to save humanity.”

With this knowledge and belief, I embarked my journey with guts, confidence, persistence and determination to save my soul in order to save the souls of my

children and hopefully they can save the others and thus eventually save the souls of the world to build a better world for future generations.

I cannot save the world, although I wish I could from the bottom of my heart.  I always believed I could save some souls by freeing my mind to free my soul,

hence to inspire and touch lives in whatever I am doing.

I know that I cannot make everyone happy but at least I can show him or her the way to true happiness.  Like this young man Royce of 26 years old who is so lost but when he talks to me I lift his spirit up.  Now he listens to me and has found a job.  (This is the real work of WHS – just be their friends and impart the right values to them to be appreciative of life and be thankful for what we have in Singapore.)  Whenever he called I will find time for him and asked him to be a good boy.  He called me his second mother.

Most importantly, I have made the effort to try to uplift society in a subtle way and I believed that counts most.

I sincerely hope you can give us the opportunity to host WHD at THE PLAZA and I can promise you we will not fail you as we will be disciplined and focused only on peace and harmony.

Thank you very much.

Love, light, peace and harmony

Assalamu’alaikum Wr. Wbrt.

Dear Brothers in Islam,

This year, Little Red Dot Solutions has undertaken a pro-bono affair in aiding the World Harmony Day movement with the management of its publicity.

This is an annual affair, and this 20th of February will be the fifth time that the World Harmony Day (WHD) observance will be held.

An entirely non-profit movement, born out of the collective desire of its founders and like-minded individuals to continuously remind themselves and the community at large that peace is a luxury not to be taken for granted.  Conceived in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks on key civilian and military installations in the United States, the WHD movement has called upon various leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) governments to effect various changes.  Among those was a call for the WHD observance to be held on the 20th of February each year for two minutes.

This year, the WHD movement is seeking kind contributions from various organisations. The National Library Board for example, has graciously allowed the use of their atrium (The Plaza) for a nominal fee and helped the WHD movement to publish and distribute its posters.

Other individuals who wish to remain anonymous have contributed the necessary finances to support the running of the WHD programme.

On behalf of the founders, we are seeking the support of the Muslim Converts’ Association. The observance on the 20th of February requires the use of a projector and screen, which we hope would be graciously loaned to the movement pro-bono.

The movement also requires the assistance of approximately 20 volunteers to provide crowd control during the event.

Should you have any queries, please forward them to either myself or the founders, who are cc’d on this email.
