| CIRQUE DU MONDE
providing youths-at-risk a sense of purpose & achievement
through performing arts
Cirque du Monde or Circus of the World, serves as a springboard
for youths in difficulty to take some positive action that
would improve their lives. Its strategy to motivate these
youths is to build their self-esteem by helping them experience
proficiency in circus arts. It is hoped that when these young
people start feeling more positive about themselves, they
would also feel more hopeful about their future.
To date, Cirque du Monde has over 40 partners around the
world and in Singapore it is Beyond.
As we are always looking for better ways to work with youths-at-risk,
the Cirque du Monde Programme fits well with us. Circus arts
require discipline, teamwork and physical activity and these
help character building. It is also an apt physical activity
for our female youths who do not fit into our other physical
education activities.
Cirque du Soliel sponsors this programme. Cirque du Soleil,
the highly successful French Canadian ‘people only’ circus
was once a group of struggling street performers. To remember
its humble beginnings, they contribute 1 % of their annual
profits towards community service programmes around the world.
As its founders identify with the difficulties street youths
in big cities faced, they created a programme to help such
youths through the learning of circus arts.
